Recycling strike off after deal reached

Recycling and waste workers in North Somerset have accepted a pay deal so the proposed strike action will no longer go ahead.

North Somerset Environment Company (NSEC), our supplier of recycling and waste services, and the GMB union reached an agreement on a revised and improved pay offer, and members approved it in a ballot last week.

This means all household (black bin) waste, recycling and garden waste collections will continue as usual and our three recycling centres in Backwell, Portishead and Weston-super-Mare continue to open as normal.

The agreement also means an end to the overtime ban imposed by the GMB, which limited NSEC’s ability to complete rounds on normal collection days in some instances.

Thank you to all residents for your patience, understanding and cooperation during this challenging time.

You can check dates for all your waste, recycling or garden waste collections on our website.

Renew garden waste service from next week

Garden waste customers can renew their subscriptions from next week.

Renew online from next Thursday (19 May) for the discounted rate of £40, and you’ll then have the service until 31 March next year.

All current garden waste collections will continue until Friday 17 June but if you don’t renew, they’ll stop after this date.

Each household can have a maximum of two garden waste bins. If you’re unable to have a bin, you could get three re-usable garden waste sacks for £40 instead.

Feedback has been listened to and as a result, you can now move the service with you if you move home within North Somerset.

The quickest and easiest way to renew is online. Please read the new terms and conditions before accepting.

If you don’t have internet access, you could ask a friend or relative to help or visit one of our libraries, which all have free wifi and computers.

If you can’t do it online, you can renew over the phone by calling 01934 888 802 but there could be a long wait during busy times.

Payments can’t be made in person so please don’t visit our offices.

If you can’t pay by credit or debit card, call 01934 888 802 to discuss alternatives.

New permit stickers showing your address will be posted out within 10 working days of renewing.

If you receive council tax support, the cost is subsidised to £10 for each bin or three sacks. This discount is automatically applied when you renew.

If you don’t want to renew, you don’t need to do anything. Collections will automatically stop after Friday 17 June.

Please keep your bin empty after this and we’ll be in contact to arrange a collection date.
